Everybody knows Paul Auster,

but WHO IS PAUL AUSTER? 

Paul Auster est un personnage très médiatique. En plus d'être un écrivain renommé et apprécié pour son travail, il est considéré comme une véritable star américaine. J'ai rassemblé tous les éléments à propos de lui et de son travail que je pouvais. Plus je lisais, plus je me perdais. L'énigmatique Paul Auster en est en fait plusieurs. Nous avons le Paul Auster en privé, le Paul Auster en public et les Paul Auster à travers les personnages de ses livres.  

Le Paul Auster public, c'est un Auster contrôlé, mesuré. Nous pouvons voir de lui ce qu'il veut nous montrer. Il nous manipule. 

Le Paul Auster privé, c'est un Auster plus secret. Nous pouvons trouver facilement les grandes lignes de sa vie sur internet mais aucun détails sur sa personnalité.

Nous retrouvons ces deux Paul Auster dans ses livres. Dans la plupart de ces livres, il y a deux sortes de personnages: le fort, manipulateur, et le faible, qui se fait souvent enrôler dans de drôles de situation par le fort.

Ex: Mr Vertigo: le fort apprend au faible à voler, The music of chance: le faible perd son argent aux jeux et se retrouve à construire un mur au milieu d'un bois pour rembourser sa dette aux forts, Invisible: l'étudiant se voit proposer, au hasard d'une rencontre, un étrange marché par le personnage fort et se retrouve également dans une drôle de situation.

Le Auster privé se retrouve dans les questionnements autour de l'identité que l'on peut lire dans son oeuvre. Dans Smoke: le personnage principal, un écrivain, porte le pseudo de Paul Auster, Paul Benjamin et un jeune garçon lui vole son nom. On retrouve des anachronismes de son nom dans d'autres, son propre personnage apparaît ainsi qu'un détective qui vient à enquêter sur un certain Paul Auster.. 

J'ai donc imaginé une hypothèse. Le Paul Auster public semble si effrayé du hasard et du fortuit qu'il veut tout contrôler, son image, sa vie et protéger son identité. Il en devient tellement obsédé que ces oeuvres seraient comme des sortes de vies alternatives, pour s'immuniser et être préparé en cas de changement non préparé, des aléas de la vie. Écrire serait peut être pour lui un moyen de contrôler le hasard, une sorte de théparie pour couvrir toutes les possibilités d'un des moments de sa vie qui aurait pu basculer. 

Dans ce magazine, nous allons essayer de partir à la recherche de Paul Auster. Autant à travers les informations que nous détenons que sur ses vies alternatives imaginées à travers son oeuvre.

Paul Auster is a really media-centred character. Furthermore to be a famous writer, he is an american star. When I began my researches about him, I was astonished to find too many informations about him. More I read, found, gathered informations, more I took away myself. The enigmatic Paul Auster is actually some Paul Auster. We have the private Paul Auster, the public one and all the Paul Auster throughout his book’s characters. 

The public one, is an over-controlled Paul Auster. We can see what that he wants to show us about himself. He manipulates us. 

The private one, is a secret Paul Auster. We can find what we want about the important moment of his biography in internet, but nothing about his personality. 

Both of them are described in his books. In most of all, there are two kind of characters: the strong one, he is a manipulator, and the weak one, who, most of the time, is enrolled by the strong one in a strange situation. For example, in Mr Vertigo, The strong character learns to the weak one to fly. In The music of chance, the weak one loose all his money in a game and has to build a wall to repay to the strong one. In Invisible, The strong one offers to the weak one a really strange deal. 

The question about identity in Paul Auster’s work is an important topic. In Smoke, the main character is Paul Benjamin, the writer’s pseudonym of Paul Auster. And a young boy stills and uses the name of the main character to introduce himself. We can find in his books some anagrams of his name, his proper character appears in some and a detective who will investigate about a certain Paul Auster…

Let’s try to make an hypothesis. The public’s Paul Auster is so afraid about chance, that he would like to control everything: his life, his identity. He is so obsessed about it that he uses his work like alternatives lives, to be immunized and be prepared against all the vagaries of life. To write would be a way to control the chance, to cover the eventualities of change. To write can be a kind of therapy for him, a way to express his fear about chance. 

In this magazine, we will looking for the true Paul Auster, throughout all the other Paul Auster.
